As the World Cup ignites excitement across Indonesia, authorities are bracing for a surge in illegal soccer betting. The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) noted that since the tournament's kickoff, most illegal online wagers have been associated with soccer. According to a PPATK executive, such illegal activities typically increase on weekends and see a notable rise during significant events like the 2026 World Cup.

PPATK chief Ivan Yustiavandana revealed that many participants are utilizing the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payment system, which allows quick transactions through various e-wallets and banking applications. Gambling in all forms remains illegal in Indonesia, and the government has intensified its crackdown on online casinos throughout 2023.

In response to the growing online gambling activity during the 2026 World Cup, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has reported a significant uptick and has reinstated its Anti-Football Mafia Task Force. This unit, which previously focused on match-fixing investigations, will now target illegal sportsbook operators and individuals engaging in unlawful betting. Polri chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo emphasized that the task force aims to prevent groups from exploiting the World Cup for criminal gain.

Local officials are also on alert. In Bandung, West Java, Mayor Muhammad Farhan reminded civil servants that they could face severe penalties if caught gambling on soccer matches. He stressed the importance of exemplary conduct among public sector workers and indicated that monitoring would intensify, particularly during working hours, to ensure uninterrupted public services during the tournament. "It is highly addictive in nature," he warned, urging residents to stay away from gambling activities altogether.

Additionally, the French Professional Football League has announced an investigation into player Elye Wahi regarding allegations of spot-fixing related to a Ligue 1 match, highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding integrity in soccer during this high-profile tournament.
