The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission, or SWARC, granted Betr its Maryland license on Wednesday morning (26th June). The company will still have to go through a controlled demo before launch.

Betr has launched in Ohio and Virginia after leaving Massachusetts at the beginning of this year. Betr has also been granted a temporary license in Indiana, but it hasn’t launched yet.

Betr, owned by boxer and YouTube sensation Jake Paul as well as Joey Levy is one of the few smaller betting firms that has been successful in an overcrowded market.

Maryland’s Lottery Commission approved Betr Maryland’s wagering license in May. SWARC, however, is the only authority in Maryland that can issue licences.

Betr is entering Maryland at the same time that BetFred has given up their Maryland betting licence. Veterans Services Corporation is also launching at the same time. VSC has set a launch date of 1 July. Bee-Fee Limited, a British-based betting company, operates the digital platform. VSC is familiar with the US, having worked as a subcontractor at Intralot Washington DC.

Bally Bet plans to launch in Maryland with a gambling licence.

Bally Bet will launch its Maryland operation next month, and in Massachusetts in July. Maryland’s wagering license was granted to Bally Bet nearly two years before. It is now live in 7 states, and the number of Massachusetts platforms will increase to 7.

Maryland lawmakers required that digital operators be tied to land-based entities such as casinos, racetracks and professional sports teams. Up to 60 operators can hold a license. There are currently 15 active sites.

Regulators also increased the requirements for minority businesses. Rod N Reel Bingo received a licence for Class B facilities.
