Malaysia Arrests Over 1,000 Amid World Cup Betting Crackdown

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian authorities have made significant strides in combatting illegal betting, arresting 1,156 individuals over the course of a six-month initiative. The ongoing crackdown coincides with the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, prompting Malaysian officials to intensify their efforts. This follows a prior announcement by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which emphasized increased scrutiny of websites, social media, and online platforms that could facilitate illegal gambling activities during the tournament.

Between January 1 and June 23, authorities conducted 868 raids as part of Op Soga IV, aimed particularly at curbing illegal football betting, online casinos, unlawful lotteries, and fraudulent call center operations. Police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus revealed that among the detainees, 24 were arrested specifically for engaging in football betting associated with the upcoming World Cup.

The raids resulted in the seizure of various electronic devices, including laptops, mobile phones, routers, modems, and SIM cards believed to have been utilized in illegal betting schemes. In addition, RM25,020, equivalent to about US$6,080, was confiscated in connection with World Cup-related betting activities.

The Op Soga IV campaign primarily targeted illegal football betting, and aside from that, law enforcement conducted 486 raids focused on unlawful public lottery operations, leading to 487 arrests. Cash totalling RM4,886 (approximately US$1,190) was seized during another investigation. Operations targeting online gambling accounted for 322 raids and 341 arrests. Additionally, Malaysian authorities have pursued investigations into various land-based casinos.

The MCMC has issued a warning about the heightened risk of illegal betting during the World Cup period from June 11 to July 19, committing to work alongside digital platforms to enhance the moderation of gambling-related content.
