BetCris Launches Conversational Sportsbook on WhatsApp

The online betting sector has long optimized its customer journey, focusing on enhanced websites and mobile applications meant to streamline navigation and reduce the number of clicks. Despite these improvements, the core experience for customers has remained consistent, as they continue to grapple with the complexities of navigating sportsbook interfaces, choosing markets, and locating appropriate betting opportunities.

BetCris aims to transform this model. This week, the operator unveiled its conversational sportsbook experience on WhatsApp, featuring technology from ChatBet and built on the Plannatech platform. Customers can now explore markets, ask questions, get personalized recommendations, and place bets seamlessly using text or voice.

The rollout not only introduces a fresh manner for customers to engage but carries significant commercial implications as well. Conversations are poised to become a crucial source of customer intent for operators. While clicks provide data about customer actions, conversations reveal the intentions behind those actions.

Traditional digital channels have primarily tracked behavior, but conversation facilitates insight into what customers truly want. Each question, interaction, and inquiry provides invaluable feedback, offering insights into customer intentions prior to placing a bet. For example, inquiries such as, "Who should I back tonight?", or requests like, "Build me a 300 peso accumulator," reflect deeper engagement—signals that can refine recommendations, enhance customer relationship management, and facilitate more personalized experiences.

As operators face the decline of third-party cookies and the necessity of first-party data, conversational interfaces can uniquely help them gain insights into customer motivations rather than merely recording their clicks.

Additionally, this conversational approach is redefining customer acquisition strategies. Instead of funneling customers into an app to generate value, conversational experiences deliver immediate engagement. Customers can pose questions, compare statistics, learn about betting lingo, and discuss matches, allowing them to grow accustomed to the platform before placing any bets. This transformation positions the sportsbook not just as a transactional destination but as a companion for sports enthusiasts, fostering longer engagement and richer relationships over time.

Latin America represents a particularly promising market for the launch of conversational betting. Messaging has become a primary communication tool for consumers in various sectors, including banking and retail. WhatsApp, a dominant platform in the region, allows BetCris to keep customers engaged within their preferred communication environment without forcing them to shift to a different app.

The new technology has been specifically crafted for Spanish-speaking audiences by AI experts familiar with local football culture, slang, and everyday expressions, catering to the natural ways customers converse while betting.

Hazel Zuñiga Gutierrez, Automation Supervisor at BetCris, emphasized that this initiative aims to establish a more meaningful connection with customers. “The most exciting part of this launch isn’t just that customers can place bets through WhatsApp,” she remarked. “It’s that we’re creating a fundamentally different relationship with our players. Customers desire more than just the act of betting; they want to ask questions and engage in discussions. By providing this conversational experience, we create value before, during, and after each bet. This approach can transform how we measure engagement—from sessions to conversations, fostering long-term relationships with customers rather than merely transactional interactions.”

Plannatech also highlighted the technological considerations of this new venture. The conversational interface was designed for seamless integration with BetCris's existing systems rather than overhauling them. According to Sean Hulse, head of product at Plannatech, operators need to innovate without sacrificing their current operational frameworks. The functionality of this project shows that conversational experiences can elegantly coexist with established sportsbook platforms.

ChatBet CEO Josh Swerdlow sees conversational AI evolving into a significant differentiator in the betting space as consumer expectations shift. “Operators have long optimized clicks and conversion paths. We believe the competitive edge will soon hinge on conversations,” he stated. “Every dialogue reveals insights about what consumers genuinely seek, an invaluable layer of understanding that lays the groundwork for personalization. Customers expect conversational experiences akin to those from major tech companies and when they interact with a sportsbook, their standards will remain high.”

The rise of conversational betting could be the latest evolution in an industry where innovations eventually become standard. While the use of AI in sports betting is inevitable, the pressing question remains whether conversation will supplant traditional customer journeys. Those operators who focus on building lasting relationships rather than one-time transactions may well define the future of iGaming.
