BetCris Launches Conversational Sportsbook on WhatsApp

The online betting sector has long been centered around refining a specific customer journey: enhancing websites, improving mobile applications, speeding up navigation, and reducing the number of clicks required. Despite these ongoing advancements, the core experience for users has not seen significant change, with customers still needing to navigate complex sportsbook interfaces to find markets and place their bets.

BetCris, a prominent gaming operator in Latin America, is challenging this approach. This week, the company unveiled a novel conversational sportsbook experience via WhatsApp, made possible by ChatBet and integrated through the platform offered by Plannatech. This new feature allows users to interactively explore markets, ask questions, and receive tailored recommendations, either by text or voice, thus simplifying the betting process.

This fresh interface is not just about changing how users interact with the sportsbook; it holds substantial potential for operators seeking to interpret customer sentiment. Traditional data from clicks only reveals where users went; however, conversational interactions provide deeper insights into customer intent. Understanding inquiries such as "Who should I back tonight?" or "Give me something on Liga MX" allows operators to discern what their customers actually want, which presents a goldmine for crafting better personalized experiences, targeted promotions, and smarter recommendations.

As the landscape shifts with the decline of third-party cookies and an increased emphasis on first-party data, these conversational platforms could equip operators with unprecedented insights into user motivations, beyond mere recorded actions.

The implications of this conversational approach extend to customer acquisition as well. In contrast to the traditional model that funnels users into an app post-value realization, this new method delivers immediate value by enabling players to ask questions and engage in discussions about matches and statistics before deciding to place a wager. This redefines the sportsbook’s role from a transactional platform to a daily sports companion, contributing to deeper customer relationships and heightened engagement over time.

Latin America is particularly well-suited for this conversational betting model. In this region, messaging apps dominate consumer-business interactions across various sectors, with WhatsApp being integral to daily communication. BetCris’s new feature, developed by native Spanish-speaking AI specialists, is tailored for local users, understanding regional slang, football terminology, and commonly used phrases.

Betcris Automation Supervisor Hazel Zuñiga Gutierrez emphasized the initiative's goal to enhance customer relationships beyond betting transactions. "The most exciting part of this launch isn’t that customers can place bets through WhatsApp. It’s that we’re creating a completely different relationship with our players," she said. By offering a conversational experience, BetCris aims to provide added value at every stage of the betting process, changing the metrics of engagement from simply counting sessions to measuring meaningful interactions.

Plannatech, responsible for the technology behind the launch, highlighted the importance of integrating this conversational interface with BetCris’s existing systems. Sean Hulse, head of product at Plannatech, stated that innovation should mesh with current operational realities, allowing for seamless adaptation rather than requiring overhauls of existing platforms.

Josh Swerdlow, co-founder and CEO of ChatBet, also believes that conversational AI will become crucial for operators as consumer expectations rise. He noted, "We believe the next competitive advantage won’t be measured in clicks, it will be measured in conversations." This evolution reflects a broader trend where users expect seamless, intuitive experiences similar to those offered by leading tech companies.

As the iGaming industry undergoes transformations with new technologies, the concept of conversational betting may emerge as a standard. The real question is not whether AI will infiltrate sportsbooks, but if conversational models will redefine the customer journey. Operators that master the art of building meaningful relationships with their patrons—rather than merely facilitating transactions—could lead the charge in the next era of iGaming.
