Fabio Macorin, who serves as the deputy secretary of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) in Brazil, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR). His appointment is notable due to his considerable experience in law enforcement, financial crime prevention, regulatory oversight, and advancing Brazil's newly established betting market.
At his position within the SPA, Macorin plays a crucial role in enforcing and supervising Brazil’s betting regulations. Since he joined the Ministry of Finance in 2024, he has actively contributed to the implementation of a comprehensive regulatory framework aimed at overseeing authorized betting operators, combating illegal operations, enhancing anti-money laundering measures, and coordinating enforcement actions with other agencies and private entities.
IAGR President Ben Haden remarked on the significance of Macorin’s role, stating, "Fabio’s appointment brings an important South American perspective to the IAGR board of trustees at a time when regulators worldwide are facing similar transnational challenges. Brazil has undergone an ambitious regulatory transformation in an extraordinarily short period, and his experience at the heart of this process will provide valuable insights to the regulators within our global community."
Macorin's background includes 17 years in Brazil's Federal Police, where he concentrated mainly on banking and financial fraud prevention for a decade. His extensive experience informs his current work in betting regulation, particularly in areas relating to anti-money laundering, market enforcement, and collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
Brazil's regulated betting market was officially launched in 2025 and has garnered significant attention as a pivotal regulatory initiative in the gaming sector. As the former undersecretary for monitoring and enforcement at the SPA, Macorin has been integral in efforts to address illegal operations and to strengthen partnerships with banks, telecommunications firms, and other authorities, all while developing tools for data-driven regulatory oversight and enforcement.
Expressing his thoughts on joining the IAGR board, Macorin said he was honored and eager to represent Brazil's experience in the international arena. He noted, "Brazil learned a great deal from the experience of regulators worldwide while developing our own regulatory framework, and I view the IAGR as one of the most important forums for this exchange of knowledge. Although each jurisdiction has its own legal system, market characteristics and regulatory priorities, many of the challenges we face are increasingly global. Combatting the illegal market, preventing money laundering, protecting consumers and ensuring betting integrity require ever-greater cooperation among regulators from different countries."
Macorin is set to participate in the upcoming IAGR Annual Conference in Peru from October 19 to 22, where global regulators and industry representatives will explore the latest hurdles and opportunities in gaming and betting regulation. IAGR Vice President Brian Krolicki expressed gratitude for Macorin’s commitment, highlighting that his extensive expertise and leadership in Brazil's regulated betting market position him as a significant addition to the IAGR board: "He is an ideal addition to the IAGR board of trustees and will be a tremendous asset to our global community."

Sessions will address enhancing cross-jurisdictional cooperation and developing more effective regulatory responses amidst the fast-paced changes within the global gaming and betting sectors.
