As European football gears up for the new season this weekend, the betting industry is also preparing for intense competition following the recent World Cup. The landscape of sports betting is evolving, with bettors increasingly interested in individual players rather than solely focusing on teams.
Micro-betting has emerged as a significant trend, enabling fans to place wagers not just on game outcomes but also on how matches will unfold.
James Derbyshire, sports director for the UK & Ireland at LeoVegas Group, notes a fundamental change in customer engagement with football betting. He observes that the emphasis is shifting from merely predicting final scores to expressing opinions about match dynamics. Derbyshire states, "Where we’ve been over the past 20, 30 years in football is really focused on team outcomes. And you can see now that the market is heavily shifting towards more player-based outcomes. Customers increasingly want an opinion and an expression of how they think the game will play out—across goals, corners, bookings, shots on target. There’s really been an exponential rise and it’s given customers more flexibility on how they enjoy the game from a betting perspective."
The growing interest in narrative-driven bets on player performance has increased the reliance on data solutions, particularly those from companies like Genius Sports. Last year, Genius secured a pivotal deal with the European Leagues Association, granting it exclusive rights to capture and distribute official betting data for 18 of its member leagues. The company’s GeniusIQ system enhances tactical analysis, officiating, and fan engagement through advanced AI technology, which gathers 10,000 data points from each player every 200 milliseconds.
According to James McKiernan, Genius’s Commercial Director, this technology provides new opportunities for betting operators. He explains, "At the moment, in-play bet delays exist where operators and their customers don’t want them. If we know the ball is going out for a goal kick and it’s going to take six to seven seconds for that ball to come back in play, you should be able to accept bets with no delays, enhancing customer experience. Machine-captured data is going to solve the headaches of resulting player markets, like shots, too."
Chris Gerstle, director of commercial and business development at European Leagues, emphasizes the critical role of official league data, especially as betting products become more specialized. He argues, "Without well-established relationships with the companies that collect official data from within the stadiums, it is impossible to ensure the provenance of the data. This has reaffirmed the importance of having official licensed data partnerships."
While the enhancements in data and the rising interest in micro-betting have resulted in a surge of betting markets, Derbyshire notes that LeoVegas is reassessing its approach to market offerings. He explains, "Maybe four or five years ago, it was about how many markets we had on the site. Now we’re thinking more about which are the markets that are most relevant to the stories that customers want to engage with. It’s about personalization, automation, and ensuring that customers are served with relevant options at the right time."
However, the surge of player-specific betting markets brings its own integrity challenges, according to Gerstle. He highlights the necessity for leagues to collaborate with trusted partners to manage risks associated with these new markets. "On behalf of our member leagues, we aim to promote integrity by working with trusted partners who have built-in safeguards as part of their operations based on official league data," he states.
Genius has established a dedicated integrity team focused on detecting abuses like spot-fixing. The company collaborates with leagues to monitor issues in real-time, providing reports after games and offering educational workshops to protect integrity. McKiernan insists, "Official data is a source of truth, and we collect data that’s always authorized and approved by the league… Everything we do through our betting business is backed up by equal integrity measures."
Concerns linger around potential negative outcomes, particularly regarding player performance. Instances of players intentionally underperforming to influence betting markers, such as scoring below a specific threshold, have raised eyebrows. Genius takes proactive measures to prevent manipulation, with McKiernan stating, "We partner with the league, providing visibility over where betting on their sport is occurring and implementing robust integrity solutions."
The technology fostering the growth of player and micro-betting markets simultaneously paves the way for a more integrated betting experience. Genius has introduced BetVision, an interactive platform allowing gamblers to stream games, place bets, and track relevant statistics within a single interface. McKiernan argues this design minimizes disruptions, saying, "With BetVision, they don’t have to exit the streaming experience to place a bet. The lines between watching and betting are blurring. We’re enhancing customer engagement by making the experience more relevant and interactive."
LeoVegas also recognizes the trend towards customized betting, where clients desire the ability to combine multiple outcomes into a single wager. Derbyshire points out that making markets intuitive and flexible for bettors is pivotal. He notes, "It’s not about adding more outcomes; it’s about making them easy to discover and relevant for what the customer wants. The focus is giving customers ultimate flexibility in how they choose to bet."
As the excitement builds for the upcoming season, it’s clear that football betting is entering a new frontier driven by innovative data use and technology, promising an increasingly captivating experience for fans.
