China Lottery Sales Increase 10.2% in April

China lottery sales ticked up 10.2% in April, totalling at CNY55.45bn (PS5.99bn/EUR7.03bn/$7.65bn), according to China’s ministry of finance.

It was noted by the ministry of Finance that there had been a decline in sales, however it added that things had started to stabilize.

The total sales in April were down by a small amount from March’s CNY55.60bn.

Sports Lottery made up CNY36.69bn, an increase of CNY1.96bn (5.7%) year-onyear. Welfare Lottery accounted for the remainder of CNY18.76bn. This represents a jump by 20.3% from April 2023.

Sales for January-April totaled CNY204.92bn. This is a 17.0% increase compared with the same time last year. Sports Lottery Sales accounted for over half at CNY134.96bn (a 12.7% rise) while Welfare Lottery totaled CNY69.96bn (a 26.3% increase).

Sales per type and by region

The growth was seen across the board. The sales of instant lottery tickets increased 11.7%, to CNY9.98bn. Lotto digital revenue grew 5.5%, to CNY16.34bn.

The betting market grew by 9.7% from April 2023, to reach CNY25.46bn. Keno was the biggest winner, with a 36.8% increase to CNY3.67bn.

Lotto digital generated CNY59.26bn from January through April – an increase of 10.1% annually. The betting sales increased by 2.4% for the period of January to April, to CNY83.40bn. Instant lottery sales grew 60.9% from year to year to CNY48.95bn. Keno Lottery sales grew by 40.5% between January and the end of April, to reach CNY3.83bn.

The Ministry of Finance reported that sales in April were higher across all provinces. Hubei and Tianjin are the only exceptions.

Guangdong, as expected, saw the biggest increase in sales in April, with CNY550m. Hunan, Hebei and other provinces followed with increases in lottery sales of CNY390m & CNY380m.

The province ranked fourth in the world for its lottery sales, which jumped CNY330m.
