Ben Keith and Star Sports: Carving a Niche in Bookmaking

Last month, we examined the mindset of elite tennis bettor Tom Dry and his path to success. This month, we shift focus to Ben Keith, the founder of Star Sports, which has established itself as one of the UK's leading independent bookmakers.

With 18 shops across the UK, numerous racecourse pitches, and a burgeoning online presence that includes brands like PricedUp, Planet Sport Bet, and NRG Bet, Ben's influence is widely felt. Employing over 300 people, he operates in a way that distinguishes him from larger corporate betting companies by accepting wagers from a diverse range of customers. His approach involves assessing individual bettors and basing decisions on actual figures, allowing him to shoulder liabilities that many in the industry shy away from.

Ben's journey in the betting world began at Hove greyhounds. As a young teenager, he was taken to the track against his will but quickly became captivated after a successful £2 bet on Sara Jones. That initial thrill ignited his passion for betting. He soon became the unofficial bookmaker at school, taking wagers from both classmates and teachers on various events. To fund his interests, he spent weekends washing cars to buy publications like The Sporting Life and the Racing Post, spending any free time at the betting ring, often driven by his father. Ahead of his first work experience, his father imparted a wisdom that has guided him: "Take the good, leave the bad."

The betting ring served as his educational ground, with bookmakers acting as his mentors. One of his earliest teachers was Martin "Lofty" Chapman, who imparted knowledge about pricing races, balancing books, and using tic-tac for odds communication. Today, Chapman remains a vital part of Star Sports’ operations.

While still in his teens, Ben worked at City Index in the sports spread betting division, where he met Martin Johnstone, noted for his prowess as both a professional gambler and bookmaker. Observing Johnstone in action during trips to Bournemouth significantly shaped Ben's understanding and skills in both roles.

After returning to City Index with the promise of a full-time position upon completing his A-levels, Ben left when he had the chance to work in Gibraltar for a new spread betting job. This venture, however, did not meet his expectations. His boss, a young Tony Bloom, was already successful in trading Asian handicap football markets. Although Ben recognized Bloom's potential, his desire led him to quit after winning £10,000 on a bet, opting instead to pursue a career as an on-course bookmaker.

Reflecting on that decision, Ben noted, "Absolutely. Tony was a very professional and hard-working chap. I was just a complete idiot."

Ben launched his on-course bookmaking business with a £10,000 float, which he quickly lost. This period was marked by hardship, ridicule, and valuable life lessons that pushed him to endure significant stress. He faced trials throughout his twenties, but his high risk tolerance allowed him to keep going despite setbacks. He said, "When you’re skint, you can play like a lion."

Gary Woodgate, who worked at Ladbrokes in Brighton, recognized Ben's ambition. Ben leveraged his gambling endeavors to fund his bookmaking journey, which was filled with costly mistakes. Recognizing the complementary nature of their skills, Ben invited Gary to join him as a partner, leading to the growth of their business.

The duo gained experience at Walthamstow dogs, gaining a reputation and incrementally expanding their operations while learning to navigate the treacherous waters of the betting industry. The advent of tele-betting, which allowed bets to be taken over the phone, marked a crucial change. Sensing an opportunity, Ben moved to London to deepen connections and attract more serious clientele.

From its inception, Star Sports prioritized essential commitments: promptly paying winners, accepting larger bets, and cultivating personal relationships with customers. This straightforward philosophy is increasingly rare in today's market. Customers are greeted by knowledgeable staff members who recognize the game and understand who they are betting with, underscoring the company’s competitive edge.

Star Sports has managed to position itself at the high end of the market, particularly at high-profile events like Cheltenham and Ascot, where it handles substantial betting positions. Ben is confident in his ability to outpace larger corporate competitors by providing a distinctive level of service that builds customer loyalty.

His approach emphasizes personal interaction: "Look somebody in the eye. Shake their hand. Give them your attention. What service do they want? Connect with them. If you can’t find punters in a betting ring and you’re a bookie, I’m afraid you’re in the wrong game."

Keeping a clear perspective is crucial for Ben, who prefers to read people and situations accurately, ensuring he understands the dynamics at play. He remarked, "I like to look at the man. I like to see: How does he behave when things change?"

Ben’s interests extend beyond bookmaking. He is passionate about culinary experiences and diverse conversations, viewing personal growth holistically. He stated, "A balanced diet, both in your tummy and mind, leads to a healthy body and soul."

His commitment to the greyhound racing world earned him the GWA Services to Greyhound Racing Award in 2021. In addition to developing Star Sports, he has successfully built a property portfolio valued at over £150 million across six countries, indicating his desire to establish a legacy beyond betting. "All of my money goes into property. One day, cleverer bookies will come along. When that happens, I want to have something to show for it."

Ben Keith's journey illustrates the perseverance and strategy required in a challenging industry, highlighting the importance of meaningful connections with clients. His evolution from a passionate young bettor to a decisive entrepreneur showcases the tenacity essential for success.
