November closes as record month for Michigan sports betting

Michigan posted historic monthly results for its online sports betting market.

According to data provided by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the state’s licensed operators posted an online sports betting handle of $650.2 million in November 2024, up from $568.8 million for the same month last year. Michigan’s handle last month marked the state’s highest handle figure since regulated online wagering went live in January 2021.

The Wolverine State drove historic results in November 2024 behind the success of the Detroit Lions. The Lions currently hold the NFL’s second-best record at 12-2 and are considered strong contenders for Super Bowl LIX. Michigan sports fans also indulged in college football, including the University of Michigan’s 13-10 win over Ohio State.

November’s online sports betting handle helped operators generate $58.2 million in total gross receipts, up from $33.9 million for the same period in 2023. The results last month were also a significant increase from October’s total gross receipts of $33 million.

In November, operators paid $1.9 million in taxes and payments. By comparison, taxes and fees for the state’s licensed online sportsbooks reached $740,056 in November 2023.

FanDuel remains popular in Michigan

FanDuel continued to lead Michigan operators with a $245.6 million handle in November 2024. The MotorCity Casino partner generated $22 million in gross receipts from online wagering with taxes for the Flutter-owned brand closing at $879,768. In November 2023, FanDuel saw its handle reach $213 million with gross receipts at $9.7 million.

That month, the operator paid $163,208 in taxes and payments to the state.

DraftKings closed with the second-highest November handle at $182.7 million compared to $151.8 million for the same month in 2023. Last month, the Boston-based company posted $18.3 million in gross receipts and paid $999,094 in state tax payments.

Gross receipts in November 2023 were $10.5 million with taxes closing at $394,382.

BetMGM closed as the No. 3 highest operator in Michigan for handle in November with the Entain and MGM Resorts brand accepting $93.7 million in wagers. The results generated $9.6 million in gross receipts. BetMGM did not make a state tax payment last month.

In November 2023, BetMGM reported a $77.8 million handle and $4.5 million in gross receipts. The sports betting operator’s state tax payment for the month was $118,893.

Fanatics and ESPN Bet compete

Fanatics finished behind Caesars for November handle with the PointsBet rebrand finishing No. 5 in Michigan with $36.6 million in accepted wagers. Last month, Fanatics generated $4 million in gross receipts with taxes at $50,243. In November 2023, PointsBet reported a $9.9 million handle with gross receipts for the month closing at $571,955.

ESPN Bet continued its climb as the Hollywood Casino at Greektown partner posted a $31.2 million handle in November 2024. That month, the PENN-operated brand generated $2.4 million in gross receipts with no tax payment for the month.

ESPN Bet launched in Michigan last November as part of its takeover of Barstool Sportsbook. In November 2023, its handle skyrocketed to $49 million, up from $20.5 million for the month prior. ESPN Bet’s gross receipts were $5.6 million in November 2023.

Record iGaming results in Michigan

The Wolverine State is also one of America’s robust online casino markets.

Michigan iGaming generated $226 million in gross receipts in November 2024, the state’s highest mark to date. By comparison, operators last November posted $175.3 million in gross iGaming receipts. That month, operators paid $32.9 million in taxes and fees.

In November 2024, iGaming taxes and payments closed at $42.5 million. BetMGM was the most profitable iGaming operator during the month with gross receipts at $59.7 million.
