Michigan’s online gambling boom offsets September sports betting decline

The revenue from online gambling in Michigan grew year on year during the month of September. Growth in Internet Casino offset a drop in sports betting.

In September, commercial and tribal operators generated gross internet gaming and sport betting revenues of $210,4 million. It is 19.2% more than the $176.5m Michigan received last year, and 20.0% higher than August’s $175.4m.

Michigan’s igaming revenues are dominated by online casinos. The gross receipts for this segment were $166.4m. This is a 29.3% increase over last year.

Sports betting gross receipts, on the other hand, fell 8.0% for the same period to $44.0m. The handle increased by 25,6%, to $457.7m.


Michigan’s adjusted gross gaming revenues exceed $168m for September

When promotional expenditures are taken into account, the combined gross revenue from sports betting and igaming is $168.5m. It is 10.1% more than August of this year and 17.8% higher than September 2022.

In Michigan, adjusted gross casino receipts for September totaled $149.8 million. This is an increase of 29.3% compared to the previous year. The adjusted gross receipts for sports betting, however, fell 31.1% from $18.7m to $149.8m.

In terms of taxation, the internet gaming tax was $31.3m while sports betting tax was $1.3m. Detroit’s commercial casinos paid an additional $8.0m, which included $7.5m of online gaming taxes and $470.071 for sport betting taxes.

In August, 15 online operators were active. Odawa Casinos ceased internet sports betting on August 15th.
