Michigan Online Gambling Revenue Tops $239.5m In May

In May of this year, online gambling revenues in Michigan reached $239.5 million (PS188.3m/EUR223.0m), a 28.9% increase on the previous year. This growth was seen in both sports betting and casino markets.

The latest Michigan Gaming Control Board figures show that the revenue of the state has surpassed the $185,8m reported in May 2011.

The $234.8 million generated in Michigan for April of this year was 2.0% higher.

Online casino gross receipts reached $198.6 million, an increase of 31.9% on the previous year. Gross receipts from sports betting increased by 15.2%, to $40.9m. Handle also grew 19.2%, to $343.7m.

Gross receipts adjusted up by 31.2%

There was growth in adjusted gross receipts (after promotional expenditure). The total adjusted gross receipts of the igaming industry were up 31.2% at $206,8m.

Online casino adjusted receipts increased 31.9%, to $178.7m. Sports betting adjusted receipts increased 27.7%, to $28.1m.

These figures include both commercial and tribe operators.

Commercial operators pay $38.8m to Michigan in taxes and other payments. The state of Michigan receives $37.0m in igaming taxes and $1.8m from sports betting.

Tribal operators also reported that they paid $4.5m to the governing bodies of tribal governments in May.

Detroit Casino Revenues Rise in May

Detroit’s commercial casinos, which also posted growth in May, were a major factor for the growth of online gambling. The revenue for May was $7.2% more than the previous year at $113.2m.

The revenue generated from slot machines and table games was $111.3m, an increase of 6.3% over last year.

Other $1.9m of the total was attributable to Sports Betting Qualified Adjusted Gross Receipts (QAGR), which increased by 80.1%.

MGM continues to be the market leader in Detroit, with a 46% share. MotorCity was ranked second, with 31%. Hollywood Casino in Greektown was ranked third with 23%.

The MGCB has issued an order to cease and desist against Curacao based Bovada, for allowing Michigan Residents access to their games.

Harp Media BV, the operator of Bovada’s Bovada.com and Bovada.lv websites, was accused by the board of allowing Michigan players to access these sites despite not holding a licence.
