The City Court of Copenhagen has decided in favor of the gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden, in an dispute over illegal bingos and bankos.
In 2019, the Danish regulator discovered that an unnamed organization had illegally offered bingo and banko to its members every day for several years.
Spillemyndigheden stated that bingo and banko was the main purpose of the organization and it violated national laws. The case has been reported to police.
Denmark has currently a monopoly over lotteries including bingo and Banko, except for non-profit lotteries or similar games. This was not true, according to the regulator.
The case was heard yesterday (8 May), during which the court agreed with the regulator’s findings and ordered the association to pay a fine of DKK15,000 (PS1,752/EUR2,014/$2,213).
As part of its ruling, the court said that the estimated DKK5m belonging to the association must be confiscated.
Problem gambling
Denmark has committed DKK30m more to combat problem gambling over the next 3 years.
Denmark will release DKK10m per year between 2023-2025 to fund ongoing projects and efforts aimed at addressing problem gambling. Recent research has shown that nearly 500,000 Danes are affected by problem gambling.
First, DKK10m is allocated to initiatives aimed at children and youth as well as research on gambling addiction.
Spillemyndigheden also took over responsibility last month for Anti-Doping Denmark’s anti-match-fixing platform. StopMatchfixing is a new service that allows users to anonymously report suspected matches-fixing.
