Betfred’s U.S. scale-back is continuing over the holiday season.

The British sportsbook noted on its website that it has shut down its land-based betting operations at Washington’s Silver Reef Casino Resort, ending its presence in the Pacific Northwest.

A notice on the casino’s website added that the sportsbook temporarily closed on Dec. 16 and the last bets were taken on Dec. 15. It will reopen in spring 2025 under different branding. On Instagram, Silver Reef said the closure was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

In addition, Betfred’s website states that it will end all sports betting in activity in Iowa as of Dec. 31. It already stopped taking new users and bets in the Hawkeye State in November and New Year’s Eve is the last date on which customers in the state can withdraw funds.

That ostensibly means that Betfred will begin 2025 live in just two U.S. markets. It still operates a land-based sportsbook in Nevada and offers mobile betting in Pennsylvania.

SBC Americas reached out to Betfred looking to confirm that status and clarify the operator’s plans for those two remaining states, but had not received a response at the time of writing.

Betfred US CEO suggested scale-back could become full shutdown

Washington is the latest market in which Betfred has closed up shop. It ceased operating in Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland and Ohio earlier this year and took its online sportsbook out of Virginia in October and Arizona in November.

That left just Iowa, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Washington either online or via retail sportsbooks.

Betfred’s U.S. CEO Kresimir Spajic said in late summer that a complete American exit was potentially “on the table” if the company could not chart a path towards a sustainable business model in the U.S. market.

Betfred is one of numerous online sportsbooks to pull back or pull out of the U.S. in recent times in light of the challenges of being a smaller operator in the market. The likes of Betway, SI Sportsbook and Unibet have all left the country’s online betting market, while SuperBook and WynnBet pulled out of everywhere except Nevada.
