Rigbye spoke as part of a Parliamentary Recital. She advised MPs that they tread carefully and ensure that the White Paper (which will establish the conditions for the reregulation in the United Kingdom gambling market) meets industry and player protection standards. YGAM’s role in promoting any discussion on the gambling industry is crucial.
For a more resilient future, educate young adults
Rigbye insists that the government needs to raise awareness about problem gambling and treat it as a public health concern. Rigbye stated that education is essential to help consumers and vulnerable people recognize the problem of problem gambling. GamCare and YGAM are currently able to develop programs that have had a largely felt impact. This includes the Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Program, which is expected reach 2,000,000 young people.
Preventative education must play a greater role in this debate. She also mentioned the insufficient awareness of the treatment options available, which means that people are not aware of the possibilities.
Rigbye stated that YGAM’s Digital Futures helped the charity better navigate the changing gambling market in the United Kingdom and the environment there. It also enabled it to respond to young people’s concerns about the digital world. Rigbye stated that there is still much to do.
We are establishing advisory boards, listening to both young and experienced people in the gambling and gaming sectors. This will allow us to understand emerging issues and use this knowledge to create new ways of using digital technology to empower others.
Chief Executive of YGAM Dr Jane Rigbye
Making Sure Digital Challenges Are Understood
As the nation’s debate over gambling regulation continues, YGAM is seeking to diversify its funding model to ensure it is independent and a positive force in the sector. YGAM argued that the future will involve redrawing gambling regulations so that the Gambling Act can be updated to meet the demands of modern consumers, who are increasingly turning to digital entertainment channels.
YGAM also serves as an official ambassador for ICE London, which will take place from February 7-9.
