The fourth quarter 2022 saw an increase in gross gambling revenue (GGR), of 78.2%, mainly due to growth within the sports betting segment.
According to data published by the Spanish regulator Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ), GGR was EUR313.3m (PS274.7m/$334.2m) for the three-month period. This figure is also 27.1% more than EUR240.8m for the third trimestre of 2022.
This is a breakdown of the sports betting GGR. It was EUR141.4m, an increase of 223.4% over the previous year and a 52.8% quarter on quarter. It also represents 45.1% all GGR generated during this quarter.
DGOJ reported a quarter-on-quarter jump of 108.5% in pre-match wagers and 13.8% in-play wagers. Other bettings increased 86.8%, and horse betting was up 63.6%.
GGR at casino was up 32.4% to EUR142.3m. This is an increase of 32.4% year-over-year and 11.1% over Q3. This sector was slightly ahead of sports betting at 45.4% of total Q4 GGR.
Slots GGR was 27.3% more than the previous year and life roulette GGR was up by 51.7%.
Other markets saw poker GGR rise by 26.8% year-on-year to EUR26.1m. This represents 8.3% of total market. However, bingo GGR dropped 11.5% to EUR3.6m. Contest revenue fell 36.7% to EUR30,000.
Marketing costs are rising
Marketing costs amounted to EUR106.4m in the quarter. This is an increase of 13.9% over 2022 and 30.1% above the third quarter 2022. This included EUR51.7m for promotions, EUR38.7m for sponsorship and EUR14.6m for affiliation expenses.
Monthly average active gaming accounts were 1,185,452, which was up 22.9% year on year and 21.1% higher than Q3, while the monthly average number of new accounts was 131.095, which was 21.6% less than the previous year, but 23.9% greater than Q3.
At the end of quarter, there were 78 licensed Spanish operators. This included 54 casino operators, 45 betting operators, nine poker players, and two contests.
