Lucy Frazer has been appointed as Culture Secretary to the DCMS. She stated that all those affected by gambling-related suicide should be represented in any reforms of the UK gambling industry.
Frazer recently spoke at the Gaming with Lives Annual Parliamentary Forum with representatives of the gambling with Lives charity. She made it clear that they were valuable in sharing their stories and insights when she looked into UK gambling reform.
Although she has been in this position for only three weeks, the Culture Secretary said that she was struck by the “harrowing stories” of people who have suffered from gambling-related suicide.
She stated, “Though I have only been Culture Secretary for three week, it was one of my first goals in this role to meet all of you and hear your stories.”
“It is so important to hear directly about families affected by these issues. I truly value your input when it comes to gambling reform.”
Frazer mentioned that she also read the House of Lords’ Gambling Harm Times for Action report, and recently met with Frazer to share stories from the Living Experience Advisory Panel.
Frazer stated that the government was ready to “give these problems justice” and meet with the affected people “to really understand and consider the vulnerability of young persons.”
Frazer stated, “The Gambling Act Review is an opportunity for us to make the necessary changes and ensure we have the right protections for the digital age.”
“Nearly all areas of gambling policy are covered, and I want your views to be heard and reflected.”
Frazer ended her speech by stating that the government will not publish its final white paper on the gaming industry until it has published it.
“The whitepaper, when it is published, will not be the final word on reform. I am keen to continue talking with you all to understand the causes of gambling harm, and how we can protect our public.
