Peru has recently passed a law regulating online gambling and iGaming. Players will no longer be able to remain anonymous when they play online. This measure is intended to stop financial fraud, as well as possible tax evasion.
The anonymity of gamblers will be compromised
Peru legalized internet gambling in August with the signing of Law 31,557. The country is still navigating the digital landscape, and just recently introduced amendments to prevent tax evasion when it comes to online gambling.
According to the gambling news site iGamingBrazil, a report by the Commission of Economy, Banks, Finance and Financial Intelligence has approved an opinion that will modify several laws.
Online sportsbooks will now have an automated authorisation process. In order to stop money laundering, online gambling sites will not be able to offer anonymity to customers.
The amendments also note that cash bonuses applied to iGaming or online sports betting continue to be used as a guideline to calculate the tax for such offerings.
The amended law also states that sportsbooks located near religious and educational institutions will be allowed to continue their operations. Referring to a recent law, it was prohibited that sports betting venues open within 150 meters from temples and schools.
Peru Has Regulated an Online Market
In August 2022, the South American nation enacted Law 31,557. This law ushered in a new era of online gambling. was officially approved by President Pedro Castillo Terrerones. Now, Peruvian companies can offer iGaming or online sports betting.
The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism had four months from the date of legalization to develop the appropriate regulations.
Roberto Sanchez is the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru. The bill has been overwhelmingly supported by Congressmen in Peru. This latter believes an iGaming industry will allow Peru to collect millions in tax revenue.
Numerous companies signed deals with Peru in response to the legalization online gambling. In November, Pragmatic Play signed a deal with Tinbet to supply gaming content. The same provider also inked a deal with Pentagol.
AstroPay introduced prepaid VISAs to the country in January of this year. MGA Games then entered the Peruvian market via a deal with Olympo.bet.
