A Clinton County woman aged 30 won $1 million by playing the instant scratch game Sizzling Hot 7 of the Michigan Lottery. But her story could have ended in a different way.
The Second Check Saved the Day
The woman who claimed her prize, without disclosing her identity to lottery officials, stated that it was possible for the winning ticket, which she believed to have won nothing, to end up in the trash or lose its prize.
She said that she always plays the instant tickets whenever they are released each month. Noting that she bought Sizzling Hot 7’s tickets one night at the store because it was a younger lottery game, she added, “I always play them when they come out each monthly.” Hansen’s Quik Stop, Ovid is a small town located about 30 miles northeast from Lansing. It’s almost entirely in Clinton County.
She bought the lottery tickets and got back in her car to scratch them. However, she decided that they weren’t winners and put them in a bag along with other trash. She was lucky to not throw the bag away that night.
“The next day, I decided that I would look at the tickets one more time before throwing away.” The lucky player continued her story. She explained how her heart raced when she saw one of the tickets winning $1 million. She called her mother and husband to tell them the good news.
It was so much fun to go over the ticket again before I threw it away.
The statement of the lottery winner
Investing in the Future, buying a home
Instead of receiving $1 million in monthly installments, the lucky woman decided to receive her winnings in one lump sum. She told lottery officials she planned to use the money for a house and investments.
The Sizzling Hot Seven’s scratch ticket game, which costs $10 per ticket, is relatively new and offers players the chance to win prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000,000. Since its January launch, the lottery game has made more than $15,000,000.
Her story is similar to that of a Massachusetts woman who, in 2021, discarded a lottery ticket she bought at a convenience store. The son of the owner checked the ticket and found that it had won $1 million. He then returned it to the lucky winner.
