New York’s gambling regulator, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), approved new rules that will affect sports betting marketing, promotions, and advertising in New York. Monday’s announcement was made after a meeting at which the Commission unanimously approved the new rules. The rules will now be open for public comment for 60 days. The rules could be modified during that period. At the end of the period the regulator would have final say.
The changes include limiting marketing options and advertising to minors. The new rules aim to prevent sports betting ads, even from children, from appealing to anyone under the legal age to wager.
This announcement comes one year and two month after the launch of state-wide mobile sports betting. The new rules prohibit sports betting companies from advertising their services through university-owned news media or assets. Sports wagering operators cannot advertise on university radios, newspapers, or other communication channels.
Betfairs are not designed to target children
Another change to the rules is the design of sports betting ads. These ads can no longer be made appealing to people under the legal age of wagering in New York. The new rules also prohibit the use of cartoon characters or entertainment music that might appeal to younger audiences.
The rules forbid the use of brand names and trademarks, logos, and messages on toys, games, clothes, and equipment used by children. The new rules state that “promotional products that carry brand information or sports wagering messages must be licensed by a sports pool licensee.”
The rules for sports betting advertising prohibit depiction and endorsements of underage people. The advertising materials of betting operators cannot include endorsements or collaborations with children.
The new rules are designed to protect younger people and provide a regulatory framework that prevents operators from engaging in targeted or inappropriate behavior with children while offering services. The Commission confirmed that the downstate casinos licenses are in high demand.
