In November 2022, allegations of betting-related rule violations surfaced. These likely played a significant part in his exclusion from the England World Cup soccer team. The ongoing investigation revealed hundreds of violations that date back to 2017. Toney admitted most of the allegations, but he stated his intent to contest at least some.
Toney abused his insider knowledge
England’s Football Association (FA), charged the soccer star with actively engaging in gambling activities. Since then, the ongoing investigation by the Association has revealed 262 violations and 30 FA rule E8 violations. Toney was immediately affected by the scandal and he is currently banned for a long time.
Toney has pleaded guilty to the FA’s majority of charges, but continues to deny some important allegations. Although soccer players are allowed to legally place wagers at online sportsbooks, regulations prohibit them from placing wagers on the sport they play. FA rule E8 prohibits players from using or sharing inside information for betting purposes.
For several months, the star player will be off the pitch
Similar violations are not unusual among athletes. Toney is likely to be banned for several months if we look at the past. In a similar case, Jay Rollins and Andi Thanoj were found guilty in 2021. They had placed 757 combined bets which resulted in a five month ban.
Toney has disputed some charges. The FA will need to first evaluate his claims and determine if additional evidence is sufficient for dismissal. The matter will be referred to an independent Regulatory Commission which will decide the verdict and the punishment.
Lucky timing means that Toney should soon be back in action
Toney’s career should not be affected by the ongoing scandal, although it is certainly disappointing. Toney’s recent performance was a testament to his status as one of the UK’s most sought-after players. The FA quickly resolved his sentence and he would be free to start next season.
Brentford’s place in the Premier League is almost certain, even though one of its stars is missing. Toney should be able to keep his transfer value, and use his performance to get offers from top-tier clubs once the FA has announced its final decision. His recent dispute will likely push his verdict to April. Brentford’s player is likely to believe that a shorter sentence will compensate for the extra month. Given the nature of his charges, it is fitting.
