Online sports betting operators in Michigan reported an increase in revenue year-over-year, following the lead of their land-based counterparts.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board reported a total of $1.98bn in gross receipts for 2022. This is up 41% from the $1.4bn recorded in 2021. Online casinos contributed $1.58bn (2021 – $1.1bn), while sports betting was $399.58m (2021 – $292.2m).
December’s contribution was $201.6m. This is 8.2% more than the $186.27m performance in December.
The combined 2022 adjusted net igaming and online sports betting adjusted gross receipts totalled $1.65 billion, 47.8% higher than the reported $1.1bn adjusted net receipts in 2021.
The latest results include $1.43bn in adjusted gross internet gaming receipts and $219.58m in adjusted gross sports betting receipts. These figures deduct the monetary value for free play incentives offered to bettors and wagered by them. The total handle for the year was $4.6bn (in 2021, $3.7bn).
In 2022, the state of Michigan received $302.98m in taxes from tribal and commercial operators. This included contributions of $289.24m, $13.74m from sports betting, and contributions of $289.24m from online casinos. December saw $30.4 million in taxes and payments to Michigan.
Three Detroit commercial operators, MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino, paid $84.57m to the city of Detroit in wagering taxes and municipal service fees during the year. Tribal operators reported $32.83 million in payments to tribal governance bodies.
Internet gaming taxes and fees were $77.83m. Online sports betting generated $6.74m. In December, the three Detroit casinos paid $8.4 million.
The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians stated that it would seek relief from Judge Joyce Draganchuk, Ingham County Michigan.
Draganchuk awarded $88m damages to JLLJ Development, and Lansing Future Development II under the initial ruling of January 3.
The court order was related to the planned casinos in Lansing, and Romulus. This was after the gaming arm of the tribe, Kewadin Casino Gaming Authority had partnered up with the developers to build the casinos.
